Bhajra Porridge

Something yummy for my baby’s tummy ~ Bhajra Porridge

Bhajra Porrdige

I have been getting several emails for posting some baby food recipes for a while. I have been postponing it because I being a new Mommy myself was experimenting several foods which are quick and easy yet healthy for my son. I must admit that it has been paying off (knock on wood) that my son enjoys the food. As babies grow, different food and textures need to be introduced to them gradually to get them accustomed for their transition to having a regular food as we adults eat. So, take the time to research and understand this while introducing new foods. The recipe I have shared here with Bhajra, which is very rich in minerals especially iron and calcium is more nutritious and also cheaper than rice and wheat is simple and tasty and I introduced to my son when he was over one year old. You have to know when it is appropriate to introduce this food to your child or talk to your doctor.

Recipe (for 1 serving)

1 tbsp Bhajra
1 tsp corn meal (optional)
A small piece of carrot finely chopped
Corn that has been crushed using a pestle
1/2 string beans finely chopped
A small piece of potato finely chopped
One spinach leaf finely chopped
1/2 – 1 tbsp of homemade plain yogurt
1 tsp ghee
Salt per taste

Bhajra flour

In a kadai, heat ghee and then add all the vegetables, sauté for a bit, then add the bhajra, corn meal and sauté further until you get some aroma. Add salt and hot water to cover all the ingredients well, bring it to a boil and simmer, cover it to cook. Whisk occasionally to make sure that the bhajra is not forming lumps or sticking to the bottom due to lack of water. It’s okay to add more water if needed because as the bhajra cools down after cooking it will get thicker. Taste and then mix 1/2 spoon of yogurt to the mixture to make the bhajra porridge tangy and extra flavorful which kids seem to love. This also makes the hot bhajra porridge to cool down a little.

Simple, nutritious and yummy ~ Bhajra Porridge

NOTE:
1. I crushed the corn kernel because it is easier for my son to swallow or chew.
2. Use any vegetable of your choice such as broccoli, beetroot etc.
3. Adjust the quantity of the ingredients to prepare as much food as your baby’s intake is.

Hi , just wanted to know if whole Bhajra grain can be powdered in the mixer to make Bhajra flour?

Aarti, I guess if we take the bajra flour to the mill, thats what they will grind into powder, so I think powdering at home should be okay although I have not tried it myself so cannot be 100% sure. But if you google you should be able to find answers. Also, the corn kernels is the one that comes frozen in frozen vegetables. Hope this helps.
